It’s been so busy that it’s been hard to keep up with the blog. I just returned from New Orleans where I shot with a couple of other photographers and good friends of mine and a couple of girls. The model I worked with is Mallory and I swear I could have sworn she is Alessandra Ambrosio’s long lost twin sister. Take a look for yourself…

So, Kristina and I had a shoot this past weekend. Surprise, surprise :) Except the difference between this shoot and all of our other ones was the fact that my body movements which always work towards my advantage, worked towards my disadvantage this week. Let me explain. I have never had a problem with positioning my body- holding a pose and creating lines without any hardship or much explanation has always been my strongest point when it comes to photo shoots. Body movement excites me, which is why I tend to get bored at beauty shoots. I have always been aware of my body, and throughout my modeling, the face expression & eyes have been the one thing that I have worked on. Well this shoot required not so much posing of the body, since it was supposed to be more of a natural shot- for example- me laying on the bed, or looking out the window…well believe it or not, when I move around the house or do normal things even without Kristina’s camera in front of me– I don’t just slump around. So Kristina and I were having a hard time making me look un-posed..If that’s even a word…listen I can’t help it if I do everything very methodologically (Kv was that the word you used?) in my own head. I am a Capricorn :) we do everything planned. So no matter how frumpy I tried to look, lol…it still looks like I am posing, but my body movements come so natural to me that I don’t even notice it….and the results of this shoot are me trying to look as un-posed as possible..Sigh….I guess I have to work on my un-posing abilities P.s I love making up words! :D

We both love American Apparel — so much so that we’d be willing to get wet for this nice outfit out of their current clothing line. Or Ren is, anyway. I kept my safe distance. :D More details on this later.

Here’s the wet part of the shoot–and yes, it got really, really wet. Just take a look at the aftermath below.

Is the outfit super cute or what?? :)

Poser!young couple_building home

A model’s job is not to just sit there and look pretty, but to sell an idea,a vision, a concept, an emotion or a product…etc etc…
I personally find it helpful to get in to character by pretending I really am that person. For example, our commercial shoot few weeks ago, where the idea we were selling was “a young couple, building a home”. Jordan, who dreams of opening his own restaurant in the future was my model partner in crime for this concept.

Together, we found that it is much easier to achieve the results we wanted if we “visualized” the scene and the concept and acted as if we really were the couple building the house.
I suggested to Jordan that he pretend this is his future restaurant being built, while looking at the blue print, I had him show me where the kitchen would be or the tables etc. The interaction became real and the shoot was a lot easier. It also helped that we were in a beautiful bright home :) and had a real-life construction set up as well. It is always more helpful and easier for me to model when it is in an actual setting. Studios tend to be a lot harder since you can’t play off of your actual environment and therefore more goes in to the imagination…unless of course you are modeling with food :) and you just happen to eat it all as you go along… woopsie! :)

Behind the scenes shots seem to be a favorite, by popular demand here’s a few from a recent shoot we did with beautiful Brynn. Catching some of the last days of Indian Summer we went outside for a commercial/stock shoot we’d been planning for a while.

Here’s Ren doing some final touch ups on Brynn. Main make up was done inside, however we’ve found that it’s  always good to make final adjustments when the model is actually in the environment in terms of lighting.

Aaaand our model is ready…btw, black and white is a killer combination ( meaning it really will drive you nuts to get right). Anyway, a word of wisdom –avoid the black/white combo when you are working on something that will be carefully scrutinized for technical quality. Whites get blown or blacks get clipped quite easily in these situations. Stick to neutral colors when you can.

Behind the Scenes

Behind the scenes among a few favorite shoots this summer. Behind the scene shots can really show the environment of the set which often remains unseen in the final product and can be a real testament to the group effort and discipline that goes into making it all come together.

Sometimes stylists get playful too and try to “steal the spotlight”…

Working on catalog is no joke. Every wrinkle needs to be smoothed, every fold in the clothing needs to fall on the body just right. A lot of pinning and tucking is going on in the picture below for that one perfect catalog shot.

More tucking and pinning…
